Character at the Core: Character-Driven Storytelling in Comics

About

This course explores how to write character-driven comics. Beginning with comic theory, participants will first learn to understand visual storytelling as well as analyse dramaturgical tools that build tension, suspense, and humour. Then, through guided exercises and later individual project work, participants will develop stories centred around characters with distinct personalities and motivations, and will construct plots that emerge naturally from these character choices. Group discussions, as well as one-on-one consultation will offer refinement and aid in the rewriting process, with the goal of having a finished short comic at the end of the course.
