This edition of the Mallorca Science School places special emphasis on interdisciplinary research, combining cutting-edge ecological theory with hands-on data analysis and fieldwork in iconic Mediterranean landscapes. Through a hybrid programme of morning seminars and afternoon practical sessions, participants will explore how coastal and island ecosystems function, how they are affected by human pressures, and how science can inform effective restoration and conservation.
Working with real datasets they will learn how to apply Artificial Intelligence tools and network analysis to study complex ecosystems, while field activities at the Lluc Sanctuary and SโAlbufera Natural Park will provide first-hand experience in monitoring and managing coastal and wetland ecosystems.
The school brings together lecturers from different disciplines, including marine, coastal and terrestrial ecology, conservation biology, environmental modelling, and social sciences, to help participants connect biophysical processes with governance and society.
Beyond the classroom, a poster session, a โCareers in Conservationโ round table, night biodiversity surveys and informal networking will foster collaboration, mentoring, and the co-creation of new research ideas. By the end of the week, participants will have strengthened both their technical skills and their capacity to design interdisciplinary research that supports the conservation of coastal and island systems in a rapidly changing world.
Amparo Lazaro, Andrea Santangeli
The course is designed for PhD students, as well as postdoctoral and other early-career researchers from any relevant discipline who are strongly committed to advancing scientific knowledge in support of the conservation of marine and terrestrial coastal and island systems. Motivated Masterโs students are also welcome to apply; their applications will be evaluated based on their CV and stage of career development.
The goal of the school is to provide early-career researchers with the knowledge and practical research skills needed to address major environmental challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and the sustainable management of natural resources in emblematic ecosystems.
Cutting-edge interdisciplinary research
Participants will be immersed in state-of-the-art interdisciplinary research, exploring the complex web of interactions in coastal and island ecosystems, and engaging with core theoretical concepts in ecology, social sciences, and conservation.
Transcending individual disciplines
The programme actively promotes collaboration among students from different backgrounds. Through hands-on case studies, participants are challenged not only to understand real-world complexity within their own field, but also to appreciate the perspectives and constraints of other areas of knowledge.
Scientific leadership for transformation
Interaction with international scientific leaders at the forefront of their disciplines will foster natural professional connections. Students will build networks with peers and mentors, and develop innovative, integrated research approaches aimed at preserving coastal and island ecosystems.
Fee
450 EUR, Fee includes accommodation in a single room for 6 nights, all meals, all costs related to the day excursions, tuition, and teaching materials.
