The first European Summer School on "Communication Cultures" offers Master’s students and PhD candidates the opportunity to explore and research the development of epistolary and communicative practices from the early modern period to the present day.
Adopting a comparative and interdisciplinary approach, experts from the humanities will trace the path from the letter-writing culture of the Ancien Régime to contemporary forms of digital communication. This will enable participants to reflect on the development of communicative practices over the centuries and to identify similarities and differences in the narrative strategies of self-fashioning and cultural mediation. The programme combines seminars, round tables, research labs and workshops in which
participants, together with international lecturers, are introduced to the tools and research methods of various disciplines: from palaeography to literary historiography, from communication studies to media sociology, from editing to the digital humanities.
The University of Augsburg and the University of Verona, in collaboration with the German Association of Romance Studies, are offering funding for 20 participants to cover accommodation costs. Applicants who do not receive financial support may also participate, subject to the availability of places, provided they arrange their own accommodation. Applications can be submitted at ekk.summerschool@philhist.uni-augsburg.de; the following documents must be submitted:
• academic CV;
• letter of motivation (in Italian, French, Spanish or German) of no more than 5,000 characters (including spaces).
Application deadline: Friday, 29 May 2026
Notification of acceptance: Friday, 12 June 2026
