Current Issues in Environmental Science

when 5 August 2019 - 9 August 2019
language English
duration 1 week
credits 2 ECTS
fee EUR 600

This course will explore several current issues in environmental science. These may include air and water pollution, depletion of soil, overpopulation, and global climate change. The topics selected will pertain to both developing and developed countries, and each topic will be explored from several angles, including scientific, economic, social and cultural perspectives. There will be a short lecture on each topic, followed by group discussion, analysis and debate.

Environmental issues, even seemingly simple ones, can become very complex if considered holistically. Technical knowledge is needed to address environmental challenges, but this alone is not sufficient. It is also important to understand how political power structures, economic forces, and other factors impact these matters. Therefore, in this course, students will study the complex interaction between these diverse and often conflicting factors. The course will be interactive to a significant degree, and students will need to be prepared to participate in discussions and share their opinions on potentially controversial issues. Students who complete this course will gain an understanding of several of the major challenges facing the earth today, and will also learn about potential methods of addressing these challenges in a practical manner.
