IAAC Global Summer School 2019 Becoming

when 1 July 2019 - 14 July 2019
language English
duration 2 weeks

The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) is pleased to inform you about the launch of Global Summer School 2019 - Becoming, 12th edition of the international summer educational program about the future of our cities, that will take place in Barcelona and in other nodes worldwide simultaneously from the 1st to the 14th of July 2019.

The Global Summer School (GSS) is a platform defined by ambitious, multi-scalar investigation on the implications of emergent techniques in our planned environments. Each year, international teams located in key cities around the globe explore a common agenda with projects deeply embedded in diverse local conditions. Because of this, participants have an international laboratory to test their design hypothesis, understanding how design conclusions derived locally can be tested and evolved globally in different cities where other teams reside.

The main brief of the GSS19 edition is Becoming:
As we move towards the future, we embrace evolution, knowing that everything we interact with in our everyday lives will improve, be enhanced in its performance and potentially customised by its users. Features shift, defaults disappear, menus change.

How can we recognize transitions and anticipate mutations?
How to shape alternative solutions?

As Kevin Kelly says, the Future we are moving towards is the product of a process – a becoming – that we can see right now.

More than half of the world’s population has already chosen to live in cities, a phenomena that is expected to rise to 70% by 2050.
High impact consumption patterns, environmental degradation, and persistent inequity are only a few of the issues that affect contemporary cities. However, cities also offer, per capita and in a limited space, high access to infrastructure and services, including water, energy and mobility, making them fertile terrain to provide realistic answers to some of the global challenges we are to face in the near future.

The IaaC Global Summer School 2019 will question some of these impending challenges, envisioning how we can reconfigure infrastructure, manage resources, establishing new paradigms for cities, buildings, matter and citizens. Through its distributed and multidisciplinar network of Nodes, global teams of researchers, students, and institutions will define and prototype actions for the application of Advanced Digital Design Strategies as essentials means for this change.

Target group

Are you a student or professional with a creative and innovative minds interested in the fields of architecture, urban planning, digital fabrication, design and prototyping?
By becoming one the GSS participant, you will join a unique global agenda having an international laboratory at your disposal to test:
–new design hypothesis
–innovative architecture and design proposals
–digital use of computational design softwares
–fabrication of a final prototype (its scale could vary from each node)

Course aim

This intensive two week workshop connects each participant to ongoing research agendas in robotics, simulation, physical computing, parametric design, digital fabrication, and other relevant emerging design methodologies. Specific emphasis is placed on understanding and creating critical research advanced on the application of new technologies in design and architecture.

Nodes for Global Summer School 2019 - Becoming edition are: Barcelona, Quito, Pune, New York, Budapest, Monterrey, Shanghai, Melbourne, Tehran, Beirut, Manila, Istanbul, Hong Kong and Dubai.

The previous edition of Global Summer School 2018 - Digitize, brought together more than 160 international participants, becoming a great success as a reference summer educational program for Barcelona in the field of cities.

Credits info

During the workshop, the GSS participants will attend specific classes to then realize and prototype a final project. The GSS students will have the opportunity to present the node outcomes globally connected with a selected IAAC jury and other GSS nodes, to finally receive a GSS diploma.
