The annual UCSIA (University Centre Sint-Ignatius Antwerp) summer school on Religion, Culture & Society focuses on religious change in an international, global context. With globalization touching all aspects of our lives, religion(s) and religious socio-cultural praxis (re-)negotiate their relevance in our societies today.
The UCSIA summer school 2020 is the second edition in the three-year-cycle on ‘Religion & Mobility’. The central aim is to discuss the ways in which individual or communal mobility influences the local and world religious landscape. The main theme in 2020 is ‘Religion, Mobility & Politics’. The UCSIA Summer School will take place on 23-30 August 2020 at the University of Antwerp in Belgium.

Target group

The summer school is open to doctoral students and junior postdoctoral researchers engaged in the field of anthropology, sociology, political sciences, history or theology.
The selection of 24 participants will be made on a competitive basis. All research papers will be anonymized before review by the organizing committee. Please apply before 15 April 2020 via our website.

Course aim

The UCSIA summer school is designed to support young scholars in their research projects by providing them multidisciplinary insights from tutors and peers. The summer school is a one week course with subject classes, multidisciplinary discussions, paper presentations and tutoring sessions. Fee info

EUR 0: UCSIA funds the following for selected participants:
tuition fee
study materials
lodging while in Antwerp (from Sunday evening 23 August until Sunday 30 August)
meals while in Antwerp (from Sunday evening 23 August until Saturday noon 29 August)
Participants pay for their own travel expenses to Antwerp.
To confirm attendance, participants are asked to pay a deposit of 150 Euros into UCSIA’s bank account by 1 July 2020. This deposit will be refunded in cash upon arrival in Antwerp. In case of non-attendance there is no refund.

Scholarships

A number of partial travel grants is available for participants who are unable to fund their own travel and are not eligible to apply for a travel grant in their host institutions. More information via our website.
