Most of our everyday life experiences are multisensory in nature. They involve many, if not all, of our senses, that is, sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell, just to mention the ‘traditional’ ones. In this course, we take a journey through the world of multisensory experiences and multisensory experience design. This journey has an international focus that builds on initiatives from researchers and practitioners from all over the world.

We explore the basis of human sensation and perception. How do we sense the world around us and how do our brains organize this information? We explore, in depth, the field of multisensory marketing (multisensory experiences in the context of marketing). We interface with brands through many, if not all, of our senses. The emerging field of multisensory marketing places the human senses at the center of the consumer experience, or journey.

We also examine the field of multisensory human-computer interaction, which deals with the role of the human senses in the understanding and creation of the interactions that we have with technology. How are digital multisensory experiences being studied and utilized throughout the reality-virtuality continuum (in real, mixed reality, and virtual environments) in marketing and beyond? How are researchers and practitioners from all over the world capitalizing on novel sensory-enabling technologies in order to deliver new experiences in digital environments? What are the ethical implications of multisensory experiences? Find out this summer when you take EXC 3675Multisensory experiences.
