Architectural ceramics is one of the oldest building materials in architecture. This course will give you an exciting insight into its historical and current use in architectural practice. In a series of hands-on experiments, you will get the opportunity to explore the great creative design potential of coloured glazes yourself!

Many glaze recipes have been lost in the last decades. What remains is a uniform colour palette of industrial mass production. In this course, we will explore together the rich and varied colour world of architectural ceramics by means of experimental procedures. During the course, you will create new glazes by conducting your own test series and learn the necessary basics for their production.

In interdisciplinary teams of students from architecture, art, design, and geochemistry, we work together to examine and develop the characteristic qualities of the glaze ingredients. Based on our findings, we will develop fitting design concepts. Each team develops its own recipe ideas using both design and chemical parameters and tests them in several series of experiments.

At the end of the course, you will have acquired a holistic approach to the broad design potential of architectural ceramic glazes. You will know about the background of the geochemical composition, the technique of application in practice and, last but not least, the design aspects of use. A multitude of newly created coloured glazes for architectural ceramic are the tangible course outcome – the basis for your very own individual colour palette!

We look forward to welcoming you!
