Speculative World Building

when 18 July 2022 - 30 July 2022
language English
duration 2 weeks
fee EUR 640

This course is part of the International Summer Academy Salzburg 2022.

As artist and Romani activist, Małgorzata Mirga-Tas makes pictures relating to a present time in the process of becoming. Starting from discrimination in everyday life, she raises questions of belonging, community and "worlding".

Students will work on speculative images of a present time which has not yet come, but which is already being negotiated. Painting and collage create a pictorial space of asylum, a place of hope encouraged by creative collaboration.

Course aim

Students are invited to narrate in their pictures stories from a possible emancipated everyday life. We will join in seeking narratives that could override geographical and physical, intellectual and personal boundaries. Everyday objects and actions form the material starting-point for works into which ordinary textiles, such as clothes or tablecloths, are woven.

Pictorial speculation will be considered in group discussions and one-to-one consultations. The course is devoted to a version of everyday life, a "worlding", taking a stand against structural discrimination and for anti-racism in society
