duration 3 weeks

This course is part of the International Summer Academy Salzburg 2022.

On the Untersberg mountainside, a small community of workers developed around the industry focused on stone quarrying. The quarry is still active but is now driven by a few people, leaving space for other activities. The framework for community life remains, and at the same time offers ideal conditions for work that is dusty and noisy, as well as space to find calm in the simplicity of mountain life. We invite you to come for the three weeks to use this platform and the unique material and spatial possibilities it offers.

The exchange between material and place, place and individuals is explored, with the surroundings as a point of departure, inviting participants to engage with ancient materials in the mixing-pot of contemporary conversation.

Students in this course generally live and work in the former workers' houses on site. Everyday life in the quarry (cooking, cleaning, etc.) is organised by the students themselves. From Saturday evening, 30 July, simple dormitory accommodation is available in the quarry grounds for € 7.- per night. An invoice will be issued in advance.

Course leader

Cäcilia Brown, Anna Hofbauer and Mikkel Holm Torp

Target group

Everyone interested in fine arts.
Please note: previous experience in stone sculpting is welcome but not required. Willingness to work and live in a group.

Course aim

In this course, participants and the teaching artists live and work for three weeks directly on site. In the atmosphere of a symposium, exchange of ideas and individual work progress are valued equally. We will discuss emerging questions on context, shape, surface, forms of language, expression and intention.

Participants can learn or refine technical skills in the treatment of stone, use and learn basic steel treatment such as cutting and welding, or work site-specifically in other media.

Helping each other, discussing ideas, perhaps developing a collective practice or working individually, as well as preparing food and maintaining everyday life in the quarry – these are common ground. There will be core working hours which can be freely adjusted depending on the project.
