The Human Rights Conflict and International Law – A Field-Based Training Course will be held in person at our Colchester campus, over five days from 31 July to 4 August 2023.

The programme consists of a mixture of lectures, interactive exercises, skills and scenario-based activities, equipping participants with a realistic introduction to the challenges they are likely to face in the field. The course will be based on a case-study country, Carana, which the UN and World Bank use for their own in-house training.

Topics of study include: Human rights and humanitarianism, Protection of Civilians, Human Rights Reporting, International Law Mechanisms and Diplomacy and International Law.

Human Rights Centre, University of Essex
The course will be taught by Dr. Conor Foley, a leading practitioner in the field of Human Rights and Humanitarian aid.

Target group

The content of the course is specifically tailored for those who intend working in the field, as a humanitarian aid worker, the UN or as a diplomat. The course is also suitable for post-graduate students or professionals who may be interested in a career secondment to the field.

Course aim

In taking this course participants will gain insights into various aspects of humanitarian field work, understand the challenges faced in the field, through a series of scenario-based activities and simulations, acquire a strong understanding of the five main bodies on international law and learn practical skills such as team-working, problem-solving, time-management, problem-solving and crisis-response.

Credits info

Although the course is not credit bearing, all participants who successfully complete the course will receive a University of Essex, Human Rights Centre certificate.

GBP 760: Non-Essex Student/Essex Staff/Essex Alumni: £760 (early bird rate until 24/04/2023) or £880 at standard rate (if applying between 25/04/2023 - 17/07/2023).
Fees include: 2 Evening meals, social activities and networking events, daily lunches and refreshments from our on campus caterer.
GBP 807: Non Essex Academic/Public Sector/NGO/Charity: £807.50 (early bird rate until 24/04/2023) or £935 at standard rate (if applying between 25/04/2023 - 17/07/2023).
