Discover the rich history and dynamic transformations of South Asia through an immersive and interdisciplinary summer school program. This course explores the movements of people, ideas, cultural forms, and political practices that have shaped and continue to shape the region's identity and its relations with other parts of the world. From migration and cultural practices to political ideologies and language, delve into the multifaceted nature of South Asia's ongoing evolution.

This summer school offers a unique double focus on the contemporary dynamics of South Asian society, culture, and politics, as well as on the Hindi language. Through a multidisciplinary approach encompassing Hindi studies, history, anthropology, cultural studies, and performative and film studies, you'll analyze diverse movements and changes in South Asia. The program includes lectures, seminars, discussions, film screenings, and cultural activities. Expert scholars will deliver engaging lectures, and you'll have opportunities for group discussions and Q&A sessions. Immerse yourself in South Asian culture through enriching cultural activities in Lithuania.

Target group

We expect Bachelor and Master (or early PhD) level students who have good English skills to apply. Hindi is preferable but not required.

Course aim

Here you will:

Examine the historical and contemporary movements of people, objects, and ideas across South Asia.

Develop a critical approach to cultural, social and political changes in South Asia.

Deepen and improve your knowledge of the Hindi language and basic translation skills via literary, political and social media texts;

Improve communication skills through academic discussions and group work with participants from diverse backgrounds and disciplines;

Have an opportunity to share your research and get feedback from experts in South Asian studies from different countries.

Fee info

EUR 200: In person
Regular fee includes lectures, translation workshops, cultural activities, reception dinner, coffee breaks, sightseeing tour.
Accommodation, transportation and food are not included in the fees (with the exception of everyday coffee-breaks and a welcome reception dinner), but can be obtained at relatively low prices.

A certificate of participation will be issued to all of those who attend at least 70 % of the lectures.

EUR 150: Online participation includes lectures and translation workshops. I will not include cultural activities and sightseeing tours as these activities will be held outside of the university’s auditoriums.
