The 2024 Winter Seminar is dedicated to translation and discussion of Plato's Republic Book 1. The seminar mixes the best aspects of a philosophy conference and a classical language school, with participants given the option of presenting papers. The academic program is combined with cultural activities.
Participants study on the picturesque island of Ortigia, where they can visit ancient Greek temples, cycle in the sunshine or perhaps even swim in the sea, and experience the Mediterranean lifestyle. January is a time to enjoy the peace and quiet of the island.

Course leader

Dr George Gazis of Durham University UK and Prof. Heather Reid of Fonte Aretusa and Exedra lead the group thrugh the texts and discussions.

Target group

Scholars of classical philosophy, in particular Plato, who want to approach the ideas through engaging with the origial texts.

Course aim

To enable students and scholars of classical philosophy to approach the original Greek texts with more confidence and provide a space where issues of language, translation and philosophical ideas can be discussed together in an informal and relaxed atmosphere.
