The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with the tools and techniques of Natural Language Processing, and its contemporary application in the emerging field of generative AI. After taking this course, students will be able to; A) understand how NLP methods and models are employed in current language technologies and generative AI; B) communicate the advantages and the challenges of computationally-assisted approaches to language processing; C) gain exposure to applications of NLP and language modeling across diverse fields including media studies, communication, political science, management, and health sciences; and D) apply relevant methods to research questions in their primary academic field and present the results.

The course provides an introduction to NLP and language modeling in theory and in practice. The course draws on recent advances in NLP, computational linguistics, information retrieval, and machine learning and explores their application in a broad range of disciplines. We will cover approaches used in contemporary research. We will engage with ongoing debates surrounding the role of NLP in technology, research and society, and its relationship to traditional methods.

This course will enable students to critically engage with the digitalization revolution in text analytics, and its implications across research disciplines. At the same time, students will gain methodological skills which are valued in both academic research and in the labour market.
