duration 1 week

This course is about unlearning what writing is and navigating inner and physical spaces through collaborative and independent writing explorations. The course offers to explore techniques of ‘writing beyond writing’, and introduces the Berlin scene of artist writing.

For many of artists, writing is a central part of their practice that is used to generate and process ideas or to create text-based work itself. Yet it is less discussed, taught, and highlighted as an artistic practice as such. Writing is often thought as a solitary intellectual practice done at your desk. This course is about unlearning what writing is and navigating inner and physical spaces through collaborative and independent writing explorations. Embracing the embodied dimensions that writing allows and/or limits, we will push the visual and performative boundaries that shape our understanding of text, type, books, and consider topics around authorship which engage with this year’s topic of Territories and Interfaces directly: how does an author lay claim to their idea and how are they in perpetual conversation with others? This course offers to explore techniques of ‘writing beyond writing’, and introduces the Berlin scene of artist writing.
