ELMO-LION (Educational Learning Modules on Li-ION batteries) is a new European battery technology and innovation 6 ETCS Credit PhD course and a summer school which is funded by EIT RawMaterials.
Course consists of 3 modules: “Online Lectures”, “Project Work” and “Summer School” (Figure 1). Module "Online Lectures" includes 8 lectures for 2 hours each provided by famous experts of battery area, exercises, and exam after lectures. Module combines fundamental theories and advanced technologies, conventional Li batteries and alternative electrochemical energy storage systems. During module "Project Work" students must prepare ideas how to solve cases provided by industrial partners. Course includes group work, supervision of mentors, writing report on given topic, and grading the projects from peers. Module "Summer School" includes lectures and seminars from industrial and academy partners for 5 days in Italy. In Summer school, students continue project work in groups under industrial and academic supervising on industrial problem and should provide solution for given case, prepare report and apply proposal for Startup funding. In a case of successful completing of any module student receives 2 ETCS certificate from LUT University.

Course leader

Prof. Bernardo Barbiellini, LUT University

Target group

PhD students interesting in Li batteries and electrochemical energy storage

Course aim

The ELMO-LION learning objectives are oriented towards understanding how to improve the charging of batteries and extending battery lifespan by optimizing the lithiation and de-lithiation processes to ensure ions being homogeneously distributed across the cells.

The lectures further explore topics that would facilitate circular economy measures — remanufacturing, reuse, repurposing, and recycling — to be properly applied on diagnostic competences and technologies that evaluate the battery state of health. By fusing the traditional battery diagnosis and characterization to quantum theory simulations and advanced spectroscopy, ELMO-LION brings reliability and accuracy in solving battery problems relevant for the industry and raw materials communities.

The modules build on an important new body of scientific research published in scientific journals.

Important merits of ELMO-LION are based on the problem-based learning and the value of solving real life industry problems with advanced scientific knowledge.
