International School on Energy Systems - ISES 2018

when 26 August 2018 - 31 August 2018
language English
duration 1 week

The energy infrastructure of a country provides a fundamental means for societal development and economic growth. Energy systems comprise the technologies required for the conversion of primary energy carriers to final energy, meeting the demand of society and economy. Over the past century, the trade of fossil fuels has become a backbone of the global economy. However, environmental pollution, climate change, and resource depletion force societies to reassess their energy choices. Corresponding political decision making in accordance with goals like sustainable development and the mitigation of climate change have led to different approaches of transforming the unsustainable energy systems of today into sustainable energy systems for the future. In order to understand the characteristics of future energy systems and the obstacles and drivers of transformation processes, multidisciplinary expertise as well as inter- and transdisciplinary approaches are required that are not yet covered by standard academic curricula.

The International School on Energy Systems (ISES 2018) hosted by Forschungszentrum Jülich is designed for young researchers and young professionals in the fields of energy economics, energy technologies, political and social science and related disciplines who are interested to discuss the transformation of energy systems and gain interdisciplinary insight. The goal of the school is to develop a deeper understanding of the challenges which concern today´s and future energy systems as well as the necessity to manage transformation processes towards sustainability.
