System Approach Framework (SAF) For Coastal Research and Management

The course will focus on the System Approach Framework application for Coastal Research and Management. The SAF is a methodology that has been designed, developed and tested by various institutes and universities across the European Union where multidisciplinary teams were involved in the analysis of coastal problems, engaging in inter- and transdisciplinary work with society and policy, tackling environmental problems in the coastal zone, aiming to improve the ecological sustainability, economic efficiency, and social equity.
During the course all five SAF steps will be addressed both theoretically and during exercises or group work: Issue Identification - the problem diagnosed by stakeholders; System Design - conceived virtual system; System Formulation - made simulation model; System Appraisal - tested model and run for several scenarios; System Output - stakeholders deliberate the scenarios. The other aspects as understanding the system using Ecosystem Service approach and evaluating the management success by Coastal indicator system will be addressed as well.

Target group

The target groups are Master students, young post-graduates up to young PhD students. Summer school will be held in English; therefore a good English language is required. Work experience in costal research and management field is an advantage.

Fee info

EUR 0: There is no course fee. Course material, accommodation and meals during the course are covered by the organizer. Travel costs have to be covered by the participants.
