6th International Summer School on Managed Aquifer Recharge – MARISS

About

Groundwater recharge, in addition to demand management, is an important measure to conserve and convey groundwater, safeguard groundwater systems and protect and improve water quality. Managed aquifer recharge or MAR, also called groundwater recharge, water banking and artificial recharge, is the targeted recharge of water in aquifers for later recovery or environmental benefit. MAR is a tool for integrated water resources management, including conjunctive surface water - groundwater management. It includes methods such as riverbank filtration, infiltration ponds and injection wells, and uses natural water sources and appropriately treated urban storm water, wastewater and other effluents to increase groundwater storage, protect and improve water quality, and provide supplies during drought and emergencies.
In continuation to the previous international summer schools on MAR in Dresden (MARISS), the "6th International Summer School on Managed Aquifer Recharge" will be organised in Dresden, Germany, from 01 to 06 September 2025, for which applications to participate can be submitted till at least 15 June 2025. Participants will be eligible for 2 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System)

Course leader

Prof. Dr.-Ing. T. Grischek, Dr.-Ing. C. Sandhu

Target group

Post-graduate students/researchers (master students, PhD/post-doc researchers), young and also experienced professionals worldwide are welcome to apply to participate in MARISS. Applicants must have at least a graduate (bachelor) degree in environmental engineering, environmental sciences, geology, hydrogeology, hydrology, geosciences, groundwater and water resources management, and water sciences. As the medium of instruction is English, applicants are expected to have advanced knowledge of the language. There is an emphasis on participation from certain Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries this year (2025) and citizens from these countries are encouraged to apply

Course aim

The summer school is an advanced training course on applied aspects of managed aquifer recharge with a focus on bank filtration. The course includes lectures, computer work, laboratory experiments and a technical excursion to a MAR site. The lecture-modules include, but are not limited to, hydraulic aspects, well design, MAR site-selection and feasibility assessment, numerical modelling, water quality aspects, monitoring, regulations and guidelines
