The primary objective of the course is to familiarize the students with the historical background,
institutions, actors, processes, ideologies that have shaped Turkish political structure. Thus, it
aims to provide the students with the theoretical background and analytical tools to assess
Turkish political development and a set of contested issues including political Islam, Kurdish
nationalism and Turkey’s candidacy for EU membership that dominate the political scene in
contemporary Turkey.
