Advanced Course on Using Mplus

when 20 August 2012 - 24 August 2012
duration 1 week
credits 1.5 EC
fee EUR 795

More and more researchers in the social and behavioral sciences use, or want to use, Mplus to analyze their structural equation models or multilevel models. If you already know how to analyze your data in Mplus and want to learn more about the black-box of Mplus or if you want to know more about complex analyses, this course is for you.

This advanced course is a five day course on structural equation modeling (SEM) using Mplus. The course starts with the real SEM formulas, explanation of how to investigate what Mplus computes, and the different ways of parameterization in multiple group modeling. The second day is about how to compute power in SEM models and how to run monte carlo simulation studies. Day 3 offers a more advanced introduction in Bayesian estimation: Gibbs sampling, inspecting convergence, and the evaluation of informative hypothesis using Bayes factors. The topic of the fourth day is how to deal with missing data analyses (FIML, multiple imputation, Bayesian imputation). The last day discusses several advanced longitudinal designs and mixture modeling (latent class analysis, latent transition analysis, latent growth mixture modeling). On each day, the morning session consists of lectures, and the afternoon session is a computer lab where the topics of the morning are applied on example data.

Rens van de Schoot

Target group

Master) Students or (post-graduate) researchers who already use Mplus and followed a multiple-day introduction into Mplus course. You do not need to know matrix algebra, calculus, or likelihood theory. Participants from a variety of fields, including sociology, psychology, education, human development, marketing, business, biology, medicine, political science, and communication sciences, will benefit from the course.

Course aim

The main objective of the course is to acquire an expert understanding of how structural equation models as applied in the social and behavioral sciences are analyzed using the software Mplus. Moreover, the participants will learn how to analyze data sets with the Mplus program, to interpret the output and to report the results.
