This module introduces students to the transformative and innovative field of advanced materials and nanomaterials, focusing on their applications in the electronics, energy, and healthcare sectors. Students will be introduced to state-of-the-art material characterisation techniques, such as advanced microscopy and profilometer, to analyse properties at the nanoscale. The course explores surface and particle nanoengineering, contrasting bottom-up and top-down fabrication methods, including cutting-edge advanced manufacturing techniques like 3D printing and precision machining. Highlighting successful nanotechnology applications, such as flexible electronics and energy storage devices, the module also introduces Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to evaluate the environmental impacts of materials and manufacturing processes.

In addition to the standard entry requirements, applicants will be expected to have completed a minimum of two years of undergraduate study in any engineering discipline, materials science, or chemistry at the time of enrolling.
Upon successful completion of this module, students will:
Recognise the structures of different materials and their roles in determining material properties
Analyse and predict the material properties of a range of materials
Identify appropriate manufacturing methods for selected materials and structures
Demonstrate hands-on skills in different manufacturing methods
Design a solution to an engineering challenge, including manufacturing considerations and practicality, sustainability, economic viability and ethics
