AI in Education

About

Although the number of AI tools for education is vast, the field is still in its infancy. As a result, there is limited understanding of how to use the tools effectively in educational settings. Only a few scientific studies have examined the impacts of integrating AI integration on educational activities and assessments. This raises an important question: How can educational activities be (re)designed to be AI-compatible while minimizing risks such as overreliance and deskilling?

The program covers the impact of AI on all three components of Constructive Alignment (Learning outcomes, Learning activities and Assessment) and addresses the different impacts on different Bloom’s levels (Bloom et al., 1956).

This summer school is based on the AI for Instructors training of the ESI/RUG. Even if you have already taken this training, this summer school is definitely worth it! Not only is the programme up to date with the latest developments, but it also offers a practical and personal approach. Under supervision, you will work on redesigning your own educational activity, with direct application in your daily practice. This is what makes this experience unique: you will leave the summer school not only with new insights, but also with a concrete, improved design for your own teaching materials.

Target group

This summer school is designed for teachers in education who are familiar with AI concepts but seek research-based practice to integrate AI tools into their teaching.

It is expected that the participants have a sufficient command of the English language to actively participate in the discussions and to present their own work in English.

Course aim

Learning outcomes
Upon completing the summer school, the participants will understand to:
- Navigate AI in Education: Identify both the opportunities and challenges AI presents in the educational landscape.
- Use research-based AI tools: Use AI tools that are grounded in scientific research to enhance your teaching practices.
- Apply scientific insights: Know the latest scientific findings on AI in educational development and assessment.
- (Re)Design your own course: (Re)designs one of your courses, in cooperation with peers, to make it AI inclusive or resistant.

Workload
- Preparatory work: 26 hours
- Summer school contact sessions: 40 hours
- Summer school assignments: 20
Upon successful completion of the programme, the Summer School offers a Certificate of Attendance that mentions the workload of 56 hours (28 hours corresponds to 1 ECTS). Students can apply for recognition of these credits to the relevant authorities in their home institutions, therefore the final decision on awarding credits is at the discretion of their home institutions. We will be happy to provide any necessary information that might be requested in addition to the certificate of attendance.

Proof of competence
Next to obtaining a certificate for participation, participants have the possibility to gain a digital credential (Proof of Competence) to acknowledge participation and engagement with the content. Learners who have completed a proof of competence can obtain this credential via the EduBadges platform managed by SURFβ€” the cooperative of Dutch education and research institutions. The credential is stored on this platform and contains metadata, making the content, learning outcomes, study load hours and language of instruction of the educational activity clear and transparent (example). The credential is therefore verifiable and can be shared on, for example, a CV or LinkedIn.
