Although the number of AI tools for education is vast, the field is still in its infancy. As a result, there is limited understanding of how to use the tools effectively in educational settings. Only a few scientific studies have examined the impacts of integrating AI integration on educational activities and assessments. This raises an important question: How can educational activities be (re)designed to be AI-compatible while minimizing risks such as overreliance and deskilling?
The program covers the impact of AI on all three components of Constructive Alignment (Learning outcomes, Learning activities and Assessment) and addresses the different impacts on different Bloom’s levels (Bloom et al., 1956).
This summer school is based on the AI for Instructors training of the ESI/RUG.
MSc Pauline Bakker Jantina Tammes School/ University of Groningen & Tracy Poelzer, M.Ed., Educational Support and Innovation (ESI)/ University of Groningen
This summer school is designed for teachers and those who are in training to become a teacher in higher education who are familiar with AI concepts but seek research-based practice to integrate AI tools into their teaching.
It is expected that the participants have a sufficient command of the English language to actively participate in the discussions and to present their own work in English.
Upon completing the summer school, a participant:
- Navigating AI in Education: Identify both the opportunities and challenges AI presents in the educational landscape.
- Use research-based AI tools: Use AI tools that are grounded in scientific research to enhance your teaching practices.
- Apply scientific insights: Know the latest scientific findings on AI in educational development and assessment.
- (Re)Design your own course: (Re)designs one of your courses, in cooperation with peers, to make it AI inclusive or resistant.
Workload
- Preparatory work: 26 hours
- Summer school contact sessions: 40 hours
- Summer school assignments: 20 hours
Upon successful completion of the programme, the Summer School offers a Certificate of Attendance that mentions the workload of 56 hours (28 hours corresponds to 1 ECTS). Students can apply for recognition of these credits to the relevant authorities in their home institutions, therefore the final decision on awarding credits is at the discretion of their home institutions. We will be happy to provide any necessary information that might be requested in addition to the certificate of attendance.
