The Archaeological Field School of Etruscology offers a 10-day academic programme including archaeological excavation activities in the Etruscan necropolis of Colombaie di Volterra, located in northern Tuscany.
The excavation carried out since 2016 by the Etruscology Team of the University of Pisa revealed the presence of Late Orientalizing/Early Archaic mounds.
During the programme, participants will learn the fundamentals and techniques of stratigraphical excavation and documentation methods under the guidance of expert and trained staff .
Workshops and exercises will be held on the ceramic finds discovered during the excavation, including the preliminary cleaning and classification of the archaeological finds. At the same time, thematic visits of the city’s museums and archaeological monuments will be conducted to deepen participants’ knowledge of Etruscan culture and, in particular, the historical and archaeological heritage of the city of Volterra.
All the activities will be designed for students with a background in classical studies who wish to gain a deeper understanding of Etruscan and pre-Roman civilisations. During the weekend, participants will have free access to additional nearby archaeological sites. In addition to the fieldwork, the other activities planned by the School of Etruscology will be hosted at the SIAF Volterra International School of Higher Education, where participants will be accommodated for the entire duration of their experience in Volterra.
The Summer School will be activated with at least 5 students. The maximum number of participants is set to 10 students.
Thanks to a partnership with the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Volterra, the Summer School will be held on campus, in Volterra (Pisa), at SIAF, Strada Provinciale del Monte Volterrano, Località Il Cipresso.
SIAF will host the participants in its facilities not only for lessons, but also offering them food and accommodation

The Archaeological Field School of Etruscology welcomes University BA, MA and PhD students or young researchers in Archaeology, Classics, Cultural Heritage Management and disciplines related to Humanities
The objective of the Archaeological Field School of Etruscology is to enhance the knowledge of the Etruscan archaeological heritage.
This first edition will be dedicated to the field experience in the Etruscan Colombaie necropolis of Volterra, where partecipants will have the opportunity to learn the first basics of the archaeological excavation. Through this field experience and other activities such as the analysis of the archaeological finds, the academic programme aims to provide students with the appropriate tools to study the ways and times of the development of an ancient Etruscan city. Moreover, thanks to the collaboration of the Guarnacci Museum, participants will be guided in in-depth thematic studies of specific Etruscan artefacts
