About

Through a series of lectures, museum tours, site visits, and activities, students will study the art and architecture of ancient Greece. In the art portion of the course, students will learn about ancient Greek art from the Cycladic Period through the Hellenistic Period. Art forms discussed will include sculpture, vase-painting, and jewelry. Attention will be paid to artistic styles, techniques, and subject matter and how they changed over the centuries. The cultural, political and technological reasons for those changes will be explored. In the architecture portion, students will learn about both ancient and modern architecture and urban planning in Greece. Students will attend an international roundtable on Teaching Architecture and Urban Planning in a Global World. Lectures will focus on the layout of ancient cities as well as specific architectural styles. Special attention will be paid to the methods used for constructing various meeting places in the ancient world. For more information or to submit an application, please visit our site. Applications are due 31 January 2018.

Course leader

Dr. Stephen Arbury and Dr. Nicholas Patricios

Target group

Undergraduate students studying arts, architecture, art history, and classics

Course aim

The aim of the course is to introduce Athens’ and Greece’s arts and architecture from antiquity to modernity. In addition to regular (formal) 42 hours of lectures, the course includes visits to most important sites of ancient and modern Athens and its surrounding islands (Hydra, Poros, Aegina) and archaeological sites (Delphi, Mycaenus, Epidaurus). It is the hope of the course leaders that by combining course work with on the ground experience and visits, students will leave with a practical knowledge of art and architecture in space and time, as well as an appreciation for their impacts on a modern city.
