Barcelona Summer School of Demography | Module 4: Digital Cartography and Spatial Analysis with R

About

The Barcelona Summer School of Demography (BSSD) program is a comprehensive four-week course focusing exclusively on the R statistical language. It is structured into four distinct modules, with each module spanning a week (20hs), designed to provide an in-depth understanding of different aspects of the R language: statistical and demographic analysis, data visualization and spatial analysis. Applicants are invited to register in either the full four-week BSSD course or select individual modules that align with their specific learning needs and interests.
Module 4 focuses on handling spatial objects in R, geocoding data, performing spatial analysis s and the production of digital cartography and web-based maps.
This module will cover the following content:
Day 1: Read shapefiles into R, general manipulation of spatial objects, Univariate Class Intervals, color palettes, thematic maps I: Bubble and choropleth maps.
Day 2: Conversion between coordinate reference systems (CRS), the ggmap package, thematic maps II: Lines maps.
Day 3: Geocoding processes in R, accessing Open Street Maps, thematic maps III: Bivariate maps.
Day 4: Spatial Statistics: Neighborhood Matrixes, Spatial autocorrelation, Global and Local Indicators of Spatial Autocorrelation (LISA), thematic maps (IV)
Day 5: Plot Raster Data; Web-mapping: Leaflet and ggiraph; animated maps: the gganimate library, review of module

Course leader

Juan Galeano is a post-doctoral researcher at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and affiliated to the Centre for Demographic Studies (CED). His research focuses on changes in living arrangements and household composition and the production of new data infrastructures.

Students will learn how to produce different types of digital cartography with R, to produce web-based maps and to perform basic spatial analysis
