Touching the Stones - Historic Buildings Restoration and Analysis (May 29 thru June 23, 2017) is a unique program where participants get to work hands-on restoring historic buildings. The program also includes analyzing buildings using free-hand drawing (sketching) as the main form of documentation.

Course aim

Course 1, dealing with the restoration of historic masonry buildings, lectures focus on building materials, such as stone, brick, mortars and stucco, mechanisms of decay and restoration techniques, while the afternoon workshop offers hands-on experience restoring the façade of the church of San Carlo (13th C.). Course 2 examines building typologies, structural systems, materials, components and construction methods used in traditional Italian buildings. The afternoon sketching workshop offers the opportunity to read, analyze and document historic structures in San Gemini's medieval core.
