This course invites students to think critically about ideas of nationhood and the ways that the media is involved in their creation, maintenance and dissemination. It engages students to reflect on the meanings ascribed to nationhood and to consider the media’s contribution to them. The course covers: The historical evolution of ideas of nationhood within local, national and global contexts. Representations of nationhood in the media. The role of the nation in the contemporary media landscape. The ways in which political and social groups use media
outlets to tell their story.
Undergraduate/Bachelor level students in any educational area.
Intended Learning Outcomes:
-identify the mediated contexts within which the concept of nationhood evolves, both historically and in contemporary settings
-analyse the political, cultural and economic frameworks that both support and problematise the concept of nationhood
-construct an argument in relation to how meia construct the nation
reflect on how media representations frame the subjective experience of national identity
-reflect on how media representations frame the subjective experience of national identity
-contextualise the seminal role media technologies have played in representing nationhood

20000 SEK, Tuition including transcript of academic records and certificate after completing the course successfully.

Includes: welcome lunch, company visits, trip to one of Sweden’s best-preserved castles from the16th century in Vadstena, a trip to Gränna a charming city where popular peppermint candy canes are being handmade, excursions in the Swedish nature, Swedish Mid-summer celebration and more fun activities! Additional activity (extra cost to be confirmed): Weekend trip to Gothenburg including the amusement park Liseberg
