The Czech Summer School on Behavioral Economics 2026 (formerly the CEBEX Summer School) is the tenth edition of an intensive 6 ECTS program focused on applied behavioral economics. A six-day curriculum includes the theory of behavioral economics and public policy, neuroeconomics, experimental methods, designing decision-making experiments in oTree, and data analysis and visualization in R. The course runs daily from July 20 (Monday) to July 25 (Saturday) from 9:00 to 18:00 at the University of New York in Prague. A lunch break is scheduled from 11:30 to 12:30, and a snack break is scheduled from 15:00 to 15:30. Light refreshments, including coffee, are provided throughout the day. Each day concludes with an evening program, such as a Vltava riverboat trip or bowling.
The program consists of these parts:
Behavioral Economics (Vojtěch Zíka | 10 hours)
Beginning with the evolution of human behavior, Vojtěch will guide you through the factors influencing decision-making under risk and uncertainty. Additionally, you will explore basic models of concepts that shape our judgment, such as time and social preferences.
Behavioral Public Policy (Alex Hortal | 5 hours)
Using behavioral insights to shape public policies has become the gold standard in many countries. However, there is a fine line between guiding and manipulating citizens. Alex will discuss the ethical considerations of nudging and present modern alternatives.
Neuroeconomics (Dianna Amasino | 5 hours)
Beginning with a brief overview of brain physiology, this topic introduces you to neuroeconomic research. Jan will share his experience researching attention and brain activity using MRI, while Vojtěch will give you the opportunity to try eye-tracking glasses firsthand.
Experimental Methods (Jan Hausfeld | 10 hours)
Designing economic experiments can be challenging. Jan will guide you through key considerations to help you avoid wasting money on irrelevant data, including potential threats to internal and external validity and how to calculate an appropriate sample size.
Setting Up Experiments in oTree (Lukáš Hejtmánek | 7.5 hours)
In this hands-on session, Lukáš will guide you through setting up your Python environment to run oTree. This behavioral research platform offers pre-programmed experiments, which you can customize to fit your research needs. During the session, one selected experiment will be run as a showcase.
Data Analysis & Visualisation in R (Lukáš Hejtmánek | 7.5 hours)
Using a real experiment dataset, Lukáš will walk you through the entire data lifespan—from curating raw data and running statistical analysis to creating visualizations ready for your research paper. As time constraints prevent covering every line of code, the full script will be provided for later self-study
Vojtěch Zíka, Ph.D.
