Embark on a captivating journey that explores design and cultural history from an interdisciplinary perspective, where every object tells a story.
Throughout the course, there will be a special emphasis on human-centred design, grounding your studies in an understanding of users' needs.
The course makes the most of several important museum collections and historic places in the UK from which to explore design, from the treasures of the past to ground-breaking
designs of the future. A series of lectures, workshops, seminars and tutorials will help consolidate the knowledge and skills required to develop your own thinking.
The course will include the following topics:
1. Cultural immersion in the rich tapestry of design culture
2. Understanding of interdisciplinary design research and its profound impact
3. Unlocking the power of context as you dissect the historical, cultural, and social forces that have influence iconic designs throughout the ages
4. Explore design history from ancient marvels to modern masterpieces, and uncover the stories behind the UK’s most renowned artefacts
5. Engage in the principles of human-centred design, putting the needs and experiences of users at the forefront of your explorations
6. Real-world design challenges.
This course is ideal for any university student with a passion for design!
An individual project will allow you to explore the design themes that you are most passionate about. You'll create a visual and written piece to add to your portfolio, defining you as a design thinker of the future.
After studying on this course you should be able to:
1. Reflect critically on historical contexts as well as current and future challenges for culture and society.
Engage with, explore and reflect upon varied and innovative approaches to design research and interdisciplinary design activity.
2. Explore, develop and communicate a variety of responses to a selected design challenge, informed by your research and interdisciplinary activity.
3. Review and critically evaluate research from a variety of sources to affirm your understanding and resolution of design problems.

1200 GBP, Apply and pay your tuition fee by 30 April 2025 and receive our Early-Bird discount of ÂŁ100. Apply for two-courses and receive a ÂŁ400 discount! Tuition fee includes course materials, field trips, our exciting social and cultural programme, Pink Plus Gym Membership, support from our friendly team of student buddies, use of our GSS Hub with free drinks, and a trip to the beautiful university city of Oxford and / or York.
Fee
484 GBP, Accommodation for two-weeks in our on-campus student halls. All rooms are single with ensuite facilities and shared kitchen and living spaces. Halls are self-catered and kitchen and bedding packs will be provided. Our accommodation is right in the heart of the city and so there are lots of food shops, cafes, restaurants, bars and takeaways just a short walk away.
