In this course, we will study which factors can contribute to and which tend to stand in the way of economic growth. Among other topics, we will explore theoretical models for comparison of cultural differences and awareness of culturally specific problems in international economic cooperations. Students will also learn to apply economic thinking to solve real-world problems related to growth and migration.
Part 1: Economic Growth, Development and Institutions
In this course, we will first study which factors can contribute to such income growth and the associated improvements in the standard of living. We will then systematically investigate which factors tend to stand in the way of realizing such an enormous growth potential. As some economies grow fast and others lag, several concerns related to societal development can emerge, such as incentives to migrate from one country to another. Among other topics highly relevant to development, we will study the impact of migration on the receiving and the sending countries. We will also focus on institutional improvements and how they affect economic development all over the world.
Throughout the course, we will use a combination of theoretical and empirical approaches. Students will learn to apply economic thinking to solve real-world problems. After the course, they will be capable of discussing and finding solutions for market and policy failures.
