About

Whether you want to try out the University of Sheffield for future study or you simply want to have an amazing summer in the heart of the UK, the Sheffield International Summer School is for you. We're 92nd in the world and 15th in the UK (QS World University Rankings 2026) and rated number one in the Russell Group (based on aggregate responses) in the National Student Survey (NSS) 2025.

Our Energy and the Environment Summer School (EESS) is an exciting opportunity to explore the science, technology and innovation driving the transition to a low-carbon future.

Through interactive lectures, hands-on laboratory sessions and field trips, you’ll gain practical insights into renewable energy, power generation, carbon capture utilisation and storage, hydrogen fuels, nuclear power and energy storage. Working with your international peers, you’ll develop the skills, confidence and global perspective needed to tackle one of the greatest challenges that we currently face: how to power the world sustainably.

You will receive tuition from experts in the field, with practical learning in the laboratories of our world-class Diamond building. English for academic purposes is tightly integrated into the programme, so that you develop the technical communication skills needed to express complex engineering ideas clearly and professionally.

The University of Sheffield has one of the largest and most research-intensive faculties of engineering in the UK, and has an enviable reputation for engineering education. You will be taught by academic experts, many of whom are senior professors.

A place in our accommodation is guaranteed and it’s included in the price of your Summer School

Course aim

Each teaching day involves a variety of activities – typically an interactive lecture, hands-on laboratory activities and an engineering-focused technical communication workshop.

An Energy Engineering Challenge is integrated into the program, in which you will work in a team to tackle the energy crisis for a small town. Through the challenge you’ll gain skills that employers value: working in a diverse group, effective communication and problem solving.

Further information about the individual session details and overall programme aims is available on the University of Sheffield website
