About

The Online Summer University 2021 organised by the Institute of International Studies of Charles University Prague will provide students with a broad understanding of the most significant impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on international relations and Europe. The key objective is to analyse how Europe’s prospects are currently being shaped in a time of profound global socio-political change, and the context for a future post-coronavirus restart. During the course, students will improve their research, communication, and argumentation skills and learn how to use them in the online environment. The online course’s interdisciplinary approach combines teaching methods such as:

live online lectures
group discussions and projects
individual assignments
independent research

The Online Summer University 2021 benefits from the extensive experience that the Institute of International Studies has gained from organizing its English-language programmes and its Spring and Summer Universities every year since 2009. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions, the traditional Summer University Prague is temporarily going online. We are confident that the online form of the course will offer international students the same quality education as the traditional course our faculty has organised in Prague. In 2021, the Institute of International Studies has already successfully organized an Online Winter School and Online Spring University on similar topics.

Target group

University students currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor´s or Master’s degree program, preferably one related to the topic of this year’s Summer University, e. g. Area Studies, International Relations, Political Science and Geopolitics, or another relevant field of study. Our course is open to students regardless of their age or country of residence.

Course aim

The key objective of the Online Summer University 2021 is to analyse from various perspectives the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on international relations and Europe's prospects in a time of global socio-political change. What effects has the pandemic had on the EU? Can Europe still be seen as an essential pillar of (liberal) democracy and multilateralism? How has Brexit affected the EU's future integration? How have COVID-19 and recent political events influenced the transatlantic relationship? What are the practical implications of the pandemic for EU climate change? How will COVID-19 influence the politics of the U.S. and China? What are the implications of the pandemic for gender equity and technological progress?
