The teaching faculty from McGill comes from a variety of disciplines. The course is divided into two 2-week modules.

Lectures in Thessaloniki and a 4-day field trip.

ā€¢ (W1) A Day in the City: The Different Historical Layers of Salonica - Byzantine, Ottoman, Jewish, ā€œRefugeeā€, Contemporary Salonica.

Daily afternoon thematic tours of the city.

ā€¢ (W2) The Grand Tour: The Discovery of Ancient Greece (from Agamemnon to Alexander) and the Western Imaginary.

ā€¢ (W3 & 4) The EU and New Challenges in its Borders (SE Europe, Middle East, Mediterranean).

Excursions

As part of their coursework, students will have the opportunity to visit the inner city or regional historical/archaeological locations. Overall, the course includes three 1-day educational excursions and one 7-day archaeological field trip.7

Target group

Undergraduate students with an interest in the history, art history, archaeology of the Classical and Hellenistic Greek, Byzantine and Ottoman periods, as well as to those with a focus on the geopolitics of the Balkans, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.
