About

The title of the Summer School of the GovUnet Network for July 2019 is "European Governance, Μigration and Citizenship". The main objective of the Summer School is the contribution of the European Union to the international debate on governance, which is based on the democratization of the decision-making process.

The Summer School program this year will seek to link the European Union as an international player with European Governance and its stakeholders (institutions, Member States, non-state actors, actors in the broad public sphere) Migration) and the formation of direct political institutions between the citizen and the EU.

Europe has always been a major global player on a range of issues of general interest. This position gives the EU the right to participate in the international governance debate with a significant contribution: support for the establishment of governance, which is appropriate for every society in the world and responds to the challenges of the 21st century, can renew the European Development Cooperation Policy and provide a privileged area for coordinating the actions of the Community's partners.

Course leader

Professor Panagiotis Grigoriou, University of the Aegean Summer School Scientific Responsible, Governance, Pluralism and Trans-Natiolisation in Europe Jean Monnet Network Co-ordinator (GovUnet) PARTNERS University of Luxembourg, Professor Phili

Target group

Msc students, PhD candidates on European Governance, European Union issues, European Law, Political Sociology, Political Science etc.

Course aim

The Summer School aims to help PhD students to better understand the debate on Governance, PLuralism and Trans-Nationalisation in Europe, the effects of EU policies at the national level and the (dis-)functioning of the decision-making process. Enhancing the existing experience of Summer Schools on European Governance since 2013, means to produce knowledge and to study the functions of the European system at the national and the European level. Moreover, it strengthens the collaboration with the partner institutions by enriching its academic offer and by becoming an important social and academic event for all the doctoral students, on the island of Lesvos.
The implementation of this Summer School will allow the production of a new concept of governance both at the European and the national level. The democratic mode (decentralisation) of the decision making centers needs to be consolidated as a priority, especially at the European level, which is characterized by severe democratic deficit and lack of civil participation in political procedures.
