About

RISEBA University of Applied Sciences summer school “FestivaL’and 4.0” is a DesignBuild summer course for undergraduate and postgraduate level international students studying in the fields of architecture, urbanism, landscape, building construction, engineering, design, and arts, or other creative areas. “FestivaL’and 4.0” in 2021 will take place already for the fourth time and is organized as a cooperation between RISEBA Faculty of Architecture and Design and Valmiera Summer Theatre festival.

The participants led by design professionals will generate ideas, design, and learn crafts of timber construction to create and build an instant spatial framework as a theatre festival center for city users of all generations – festival guests and locals of Valmiera. The summer school is devoted to the idea of contemporary urban interventions as catalysts for important turns in the perception and use of the urban environment.

Valmiera Summer Theater festival is a unique theater event held annually in the urban scenery, open-air, and indoors in non-traditional locations in Valmiera city, Latvia. The performances are exclusively produced for the festival by national and internationally renowned theatre professionals. The festival is in search of unusual places and original forms, which enrich and provoke new experiences of festival visitors and Valmiera locals. Festival center built during the summer school as a live project is an integral part and astounding focal point of the event.

The first application round for foreign participants* seeking scholarships is open until April 1, 2021.Latvian state scholarships are administered by the State Education Development Agency and will be awarded on a competitive basis in a careful evaluation after receiving all applications.

The course will be organized accordingly to state restrictions due to COVID-19. The priority is to hold an event in person but optionally scenarios for online mode will be developed. Participants will be informed accordingly.

Course leader

The summer school will be led by the international and interdisciplinary team of architects and designers, landscape specialists, artists and invited peforming arts professionals. Programme curator: architect Dina Suhanova.

Target group

Undergraduate or postgraduate level students from universities studying architecture, urbanism, landscape architecture, building construction and engineering, design and arts, scenography, or other creative fields. Participants must have completed at least one year of their undergraduate studies. We also welcome foreign teaching and research staff to apply. Applicants should have at least Advanced level of English language.

Course aim

The course as a live project aims to encourage students to apply their theoretical knowledge, develop and train the skills in the design process from developing, testing, and constructing unexpected ideas in urban settings on scale 1:1.

711 EUR, Full participation fee – if registration is performed after April 1. The fee covers accommodation in the student housing, catering (2 meals per day), workshops and discussion sessions, guest lectures and tutoring, guided excursions and site visits, building tools, and materials, social programme and culture activities planned during the summer school. Participants will also get an opportunity to join performances held within the theatre festival program. The travel, VISA, and insurance costs must be covered by the participant.
