About

The 3-week summer school offers students a unique experience to learn about the key theories and themes in Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM). Lectures, seminars, and field trips will help participants to explore the evolution of various niche tourism industries such as sport, film and TV, music, events, food, and the outdoors. Students will receive an innovative and inspiring programme which offers a rewarding international experience, including learning how to play the Highland Bagpipes, going to a traditional Highland Games, participating in a Scottish cooking workshop, and going on fieldtrips to the official Hogwarts clothing manufacturer and to a whisky distillery.

Course leader

Tom Bourkel – Teaching Fellow in Hospitality and Tourism Management

Target group

International students aged 18 and over. No knowledge of HTM is required.

Course aim

The summer school aims to teach the key theories and themes in hospitality and tourism management. Students are introduced to the evolution of the tourism product in Scotland, its fast-growing dimensions, both from an economic and a specialised perspective. Through the prism of case studies, interactive lectures and workshops this course helps students to strengthen their problem solving and critical thinking skills. The first part of the course provides students with a strong insight into the key hospitality and tourism management theories. After the first phase the course delves deeper into Niche tourism products, examining one of the fastest growing areas within the tourism sector. Specifically, it investigates certain niche products establishing and positioning Scotland as a thriving niche tourism destination. The last part of the course will be dedicated to the future: students will get to know the latest consumer expectations and trends as well as reflect on emerging drivers of change for hospitality and tourism management. Students also have the chance to visit locations with specific niche products in Scotland. A group project rounds up the course for which students will develop an innovative tourism product that can be tailored to meet the needs of a particular audience/market segment.
