About

Organised in cooperation with Duke University School of Law, ranked 1st in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, The Duke-Leiden Institute in Global and Transnational Law is a one-month residential programme providing a strong foundation for those interested in international and comparative law as well as for those planning to study law in the United States. Courses are taught by lecturers from both Duke Law School and Leiden Law School and will focus on subjects such as international trade, human rights, international criminal law, comparative constitutional law and American law.

The Duke-Leiden Institute in Global and Transnational Law will take place from 16 June to 17 July 2019 at Leiden University in The Hague, known as the International City of Peace and Justice.

The programme is divided into 2 two-week terms. All courses are taught in English and all (except for Introduction to American Law) are taught by faculty members from different legal cultures, exposing participants not only to comparative law studies but also to different teaching methods.

The courses offered during the Duke-Leiden Institute 2019 are the following:

• Comparative Perspectives on Criminal Justice: Central Issues and Contextual Implementation
by Prof. James Coleman and Dr. Pinar Olcer
• Introduction to American Law
by Prof. Thomas Metzloff and Prof. Doriane Coleman
• Realizing Rights: Strategic Human Rights Litigation and Advocacy
by Prof. Jayne Huckerby and Prof. Helen Duffy

Target group

The Institute is aimed at students who have completed at least three years of law study, students preparing to study for an LLM degree in the United States, and other advanced law students from all countries. The Institute also welcomes judges, academics, practitioners, and other professionals seeking knowledge of American, international, and comparative law to apply for the programme.

Course aim

This one-month Institute aims at providing a strong foundation in international and comparative law for both students and young professionals.
