The course evolves on central questions of hospital planning and the location of the hospital in a health-promoting urban context. It gives an overview of the most important influencing factors in programming, conception and design of hospitals. Innovative approaches of architectural planning in practice and research with regard to evidence-based planning are discussed.
As a practical example, participants will explore the main campus of Charité-Universitätsmedizin, Berlin’s most prestigious hospital and one of Europe’s biggest university medical clinics, which is currently undergoing a dynamic reorganization.

Target group

The summer school is open to international master’s students and professionals in architecture, engineering, health sciences and health care management and all those who wish to deepen their knowledge in the field of health care building design & management and healthy urban planning.

Course aim

The participants understand the basics of architectural planning of hospitals and are informed about current trends in the field.
They have discussed the role of hospitals as part of urban healthcare environment. Participants understand processes and players framing the project development of hospitals and are able to understand and evaluate evidence-based design strategies.
