The International Humanitarian Law Summer School, designed by the Grotius Centre Kalshoven-Gieskes Forum on International Humanitarian Law and organized in close cooperation with the Netherlands Red Cross, aims to give a broad overview of the laws of armed conflict. The 5 day course consists of a mix of lectures, fieldtrips and exercises, including an exciting paintball simulation in which you will have to apply international humanitarian law in practice!
Topics include:
- Protection of the Civilian Population
- Combatants and Prisoners of War
- Autonomous Weapons and Cyber Warfare
- The Law of Non-International Armed Conflict
- Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response Law
- Enforcement and Implementation of International Humanitarian Law
Dr. Robert Heinsch, Associate Professor of Public International Law at the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies and Director of the Kalshoven-Gieskes Forum on International Humanitarian Law at Leiden University
This summer school welcomes students and professionals who wish to acquire a basic understanding of international humanitarian law. A background in law is not required. Students from other disciplines, such as (but not limited to) international relations, international studies, international development studies or conflict studies are welcome to attend as well.

900 EUR, The fee includes a Leiden University summer school bag, a summer school certificate and group photo, lunches and refreshments on class days, field trips, a welcome dinner in the city centre and a farewell dinner at the beach.
Fee
750 EUR, We offer a special Early Bird fee of €750 to the participants who register before 1 April 2017. Leiden University students, students from partner universities, and participants who have registered for another Grotius Centre summer school pay a reduced fee of €750.
