Introduction to the Hungarian Language and Culture

About

This BSU program is designed to provide a deeper understanding of the region, as well as insight into its culture and society. The course is aimed at those who have not yet studied Hungarian as a foreign language or culture, or are beginners. We also recommend the course to students who will be continuing their studies at any faculty of ELTE or other higher education institutions in Hungary in the upcoming semester (e.g., Erasmus+).

Hungary has historically been and continues to be a melting pot, a meeting point for Central European cultures, and thus serves as a good starting point for understanding the entire region. This is the goal of this summer university course. By considering the language and culture as an integrated whole, participants will discover Hungarian culture through the example of the Hungarian language, and, in some cases, the cultures of other Central European peoples with whom we have historically shared close ties (e.g., Slovak, Czech, Polish, etc.). Through project work and workshops held at external locations, we will explore essential elements of the region's identity, such as gastronomy, film and visual arts, literature, and popular everyday culture.

Course leader

ELTE Faculty of Humanities

Target group

The course is open to anyone interested in Hungarian language and culture. Foundation level for complete beginners.

Course aim

We will address both the commonalities and differences when compared to other cultures, typically those of the participants' own backgrounds (e.g., Chinese, Japanese, Polish, German, etc.). Through all of this, participants will gain insight into the deeper connections that define and shape the society that lives here today, which also influence current processes, cultural life, and social relations.
