About

This two-week theatre skills, playwriting, and performing course makes use of the UK’s long-standing reputation as a leading centre of theatre-making to explore English Language learning and intercultural communication through performance and writing for performance.

On this course you will be introduced to drama exercises that encourage listening, ensemble awareness, and creative collaboration in a playful, non-traditional, and physically energising environment. This setting also serves as a unique space to explore English language learning and intercultural communication in all its forms.

On this course you will:
1. be taught basic playwriting skills, including character creation, spoken improvisations, simple devising, and short writing exercises
2. have workshops on intercultural communication
3. explore theatre principles based on Stanislavskian techniques.

Course leader

Sam Barclay, Senior Lecturer in the Nottingham Institute of Languages and Intercultural Communication.

Target group

This course is perfect for university level students from any discipline with a passion for playwriting and performing. The English language requirement for this course is an overall score of 5.5 IELTS or equivalent.

Course aim

You will create a short play for two characters with the support of our theatre and script development tutor. There will be time for rehearsal, staging, and performance and you will perform in each other's plays with support from our professional actor!

After studying on this course you will:
1. build your confidence in public speaking and acting in English
2. develop your playwriting skills
3. develop your English language skills
4. have lots of opportunities for cross-cultural communication.

Fee

1200 GBP, Apply and pay your tuition fee by 30 April 2025 and receive our Early-Bird discount of ÂŁ100. Apply for two-courses and receive a ÂŁ400 discount! Tuition fee includes course materials, field trips, our exciting social and cultural programme, Pink Plus Gym Membership, support from our friendly team of student buddies, use of our GSS Hub with free drinks, and a trip to the beautiful university city of Oxford and / or York.

Fee

484 GBP, Accommodation for two-weeks in our on-campus student halls. All rooms are single with ensuite facilities and shared kitchen and living spaces. Halls are self-catered and kitchen and bedding packs will be provided. Our accommodation is right in the heart of the city and so there are lots of food shops, cafes, restaurants, bars and takeaways just a short walk away.
