This course gives an introduction to Swedish culture and society, including aspects of history, social structures, welfare, education, and political system. It also provides the opportunity to learn and practice the Swedish language at a beginner’s level, i.e. A1:1 according to the Common European Framework for languages.

Target group

The course is given within the framework of the Linköping University Summer Academy and is only open to students from Linköping University's partner universities. The course is on bachelor level and is offered in English.

To meet the general entry requirements, students must have completed one year of full-time studies upon application (passed 60 ECTS credits or equivalent) and be nominated by one of LiU’s partner universities.

Course aim

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

- understand familiar and daily Swedish expressions used in frequently recurring situations of communication.
- introduce themselves in Swedish and answer questions concerning basic facts about themselves.
- participate in an ordinary interaction, at least partially, by means of simple statements if the interlocutor speaks slowly and clearly and shows themselves cooperative and friendly.
- in English describe and discuss aspects of Swedish history and welfare with regard to social structure, educational system and political system.
