The World Maritime University (WMU) is a unique academic institution, founded within the framework of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations. The University has a reputation for bringing together stakeholders such as academics, researchers, professionals, and industry to explore cross-cutting topics facing the maritime industry.
The WMU Summer Institute provides a unique opportunity for these stakeholders to gather and share knowledge, as well as collaborate on potential solutions that will directly benefit the maritime industry.

In 2022, the WMU Summer Institute is launching its initial course with a focus on Maritime Decarbonization, offering a forum for education and discussion on reducing GHG emissions from shipping. The philosophy behind the Maritime Decarbonization course is that the inevitable maritime energy transition is an opportunity for the industry. Maritime transport inherently offers the lowest GHG emissions and energy consumption per transport mode, and the maritime industry has a wide range of technical possibilities for energy saving and replacement of fossil energy with sustainable options. Maritime transport also has great opportunities for adopting carbon free energy sources given the dimensions of commercial vessels, and that vast renewable energy resources are available on the world’s oceans.

The Maritime Decarbonization course takes a holistic approach to maritime decarbonization by looking at regulatory, social, environmental, technological and economic challenges. In the unique international setting provided by WMU, through a combination of lectures and participant interaction, the course will highlight the complexity of the issues surrounding decarbonization of shipping while looking for solutions. The course covers fundamental international regulations, technical aspects of ship design, future energy technologies including wind and solar power, and looks at the economic mechanisms that determine to a large extent the plausible pathways for decarbonization in the context of supply chain and financing.

Target group

The Maritime Decarbonization Summer Institute is open to individuals interested in gaining a thorough understanding of the maritime decarbonization and IMO/EU GHG reduction strategies for the shipping sector and those interested in acquiring further skills for career development. This includes graduate/PhD students, researchers, and other academics, as well as industry professionals (maritime companies, shore personnel, naval architects, and marine engineers), shipping and port/shipyard professionals (engineers, managers, and executives) and other individuals engaged in decarbonization and the processes of the IMO GHG Strategy.

Course aim

Participants who complete the WMU Summer Institute on Maritime Decarbonization should:

1. Understand the regulatory framework of air pollution resulting from international shipping including the UN 2030 Agenda
2. Gain a deeper understanding of different technical and operational options for decarbonizing the maritime sectors
3. Grasp current innovation in the maritime industry, with a focus on future energy technologies, and GHG reductions
4. Be familiar with the range of financing mechanisms and potential government support (financial incentives) to facilitate the energy transition of the shipping sector
5. Be familiar with the wide range of actors in the maritime sector including ports
