About

Economics has become increasingly mathematical over the 20th century and now relies on sophisticated mathematical tools and techniques to solve economic problems.

This course aims to give you the mathematical background you need to study economics more effectively and with greater confidence.

Week one
Maths refresher
Matrices and systems of linear equations
Determinants
Cramer’s rule

Week two
Calculus of several variables: unconstrained and constrained optimisation
Concavity and convexity
Implicit functions
Duality, Roy’s identity, Shephard's lemma

Week three
Comparative statics, total derivatives, total differential
Envelope theorems
Homogeneous and homothetic functions

Course aim

This module aims to:

- Provide you with the mathematical background needed to progress to more advanced courses in economics.
- Develop your technical skills in elementary matrix algebra, univariate calculus, the calculus of several variables, and unconstrained and constrained optimisation
