Micro and Nano Sensors

About

Micro and nano sensors are emerging as promising techniques in for example diagnostics and environmental control. They have the potential to be very small, simple and cheap with all sample preparation integrated. However, it is sometimes complicated to understand the limitations and possibilities of the individual technologies both in terms of realization and applications. We will in this course get an introduction to several sensors such as optical sensors, electrochemical sensors and surface enhanced Raman scattering based sensors. Come and join us in this challenging endeavor!

Aim
The aim of this summer school is to give you an overview of the state of the art micro and nano sensors such as electrochemical sensors and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

* Fabricate a micro/nano sensor
* Apply micro/nano sensors
* Discuss the opportunities of micro/nano sensors in drug delivery and the biomedical area
* Evaluate strength and weaknesses of different sensor technologies
* Understand the needs and requirements from external partners (academia/industry) when designing and choosing micro/nano sensor technologies
* Plan and follow key experimental steps in sensor development – from fabrication to characterization
* Present results in form of a poster and by a scientific pitch
* Act as an active and critical listener at scientific seminars

Teaching methods
We will combine lectures on sensing principles and surface chemistry with lab work.

The lab work will be performed in teams (decided by the course leaders) and the developed technologies with be discussed in plenum to be able to discover pro and cons on the various technologies and techniques.

By the end of the summer school, we will in collaboration have generated an overview of available sensors to be used in for examples in drug delivery and the biological area.
