Mobility in Transition

About

The Summer School centres upon ‘Mobility in Transition’ based on five categories: (1) Policy and Governance, (2) Technologies and Infrastructure, (3) Markets, (4) Culture, and (5) Mobility Patterns.

Accordingly, socio-technical transport systems can be analysed by the following five interconnected elements:

1. Policy and Governance (e.g. policies towards sustainability effecting fuel taxes, road pricing, and the promotion of particular modes, urban planning, and infrastructure planning)
2. Technologies and Infrastructures (e.g. vehicles/means of transport and the complementary infrastructure as well as steering mechanisms of the systems: management systems, facilities, lanes, walkways, optimized logistic systems incorporating vehicles, infrastructure, and planning schemes)
3. Markets (e.g. business models, products, and services and organization of the markets: Car-Sharing, Car-Selling, Ride-Pooling, Mobility-Apps, monopoly/competition, logistic services)
4. Culture (e.g. symbolic meanings of cars and other means of transport, historical traditions, visions, cultural preferences, media reception à mobility and transport systems considered as social construction)
5. Mobility patterns (attitudes and actual behaviour: trip length, travel times, used means of transport)

The Boysen Summer School takes an international perspective on the mobility transition, since the five interconnected elements of socio-technical transport systems as well as the needs of the people and respective external effects may differ between global regions.

Course aim

The third Boysen-TUD Research Training Group is hosting the Summer School "Mobility in Transition". We tackle possible pathways of future mobility by creating an interdisciplinary understanding of the complexity of the whole transport system, while focusing on specific elements, developments, drivers, and impacts.

Upon successful completion of the programme, participants obtain a certificate granting them four ECTS from TU Dresden.
