About

Quantitative analysis is increasingly considered as a critical part of scientific research in the realm of anthropology, archaeology, and cultural heritage. New 3D technologies facilitate the quick and accurate generation of high volumes of data that need to be managed and analysed. This course will provide participants with the basic knowledge of geometric morphometric methods and an introduction to the R statistical computing environment. More specifically, shape variables will be acquired using the software Viewbox (e.g. building a template of 3D landmarks/semilandmarks, and applying the template onto each of the target specimens), while post-processing operations on the datasets, exploratory data analysis, and geometric morphometric analysis will be performed in R.

Course leader

Prof. Dr. Stefano Benazzi, Director of the Laboratory of Physical Anthropology and ancient DNA. Department of Cultural Heritage. University of Bologna

Target group

The courses are suitable for undergraduate/graduate students, PhD students, post-doctoral researchers, and professionals in the field of anthropology, archaeology, medicine and dentistry who are interested in developing fundamental skills in 3D data acquisition and post processing
