Each year the University of Oxford holds a Summer School which focuses on applications of nanotechnologies in a different field. Comprising presentations from leading researchers and practitioners from the University of Oxford and beyond, in 2015 the theme is Nanotechnologies for Medicine and Healthcare, reflecting growing interest in the subject and the University of Oxford's position at the cutting-edge of research and development.

Nanotechnology is a new exciting field that has the potential to transform the way that medical and healthcare solutions are developed and delivered. This year’s Nanotechnology Summer School will focus on the impact that nanotechnology has in the advance of medicine, healthcare and bio-sensing techniques and discuss how to progress this area to meet future needs.

This five-day intensive course provides a thorough overview of the exciting and emerging discipline of nanomedicine. Each of the five days of the Nanomedicine Summer School has a dedicated theme and is led by key researchers in the field. When combined the course covers all aspects of the nanomedicine, including diagnostics, therapeutics, biosensors and nanotechnologies for regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. The course will be valuable to those seeking an introduction to current research and applications in the subject.

•Monday: Introduction to Nanomedicine: Challenges and Opportunities
•Tuesday: Nanotechnologies for Regenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering
•Wednesday: Nanomedicine - Diagnostics
•Thursday: Nano-Biosensors
•Friday: Nano-Pharmaceuticals

Course leader

Dr Christiane Norenberg Role: Director Christiane is the Nanotechnology HEIF Manager at the University of Oxford's Begbroke Science Park. She received her DPhil in Materials Science from the University of Oxford in 1998 and continued with postdocto

Course aim

The course aims to introduce researchers, health professionals and regulators to the applications of nanotechnologies in medicine and healthcare, especially in the areas of diagnostics, therapy and regenerative medicine.

The objectives of the course are:
•To introduce participants to the emerging field of nanomedicine and to give an overview of present and future applications of nanotechnologies and nanomaterials in medicine and healthcare
•To provide an environment in which participants from a range of backgrounds can learn from eminent scientists in the field and can share their ideas in discussions with subject specialists
• To enable participants to make informed decisions about applications of nanotechnologies in their own field of work.
